Your SEO Is In Trouble Because Of AI
Google SGE
It’s not like we didn’t see this coming and still it’s a little bit of a kick in the face…A recent study reveals that Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE) mostly features links different from those in its top 10 organic search results. About 94% of the time, the AI-generated answers in SGE do not match the links in Google's regular search results. This implies that websites featured in SGE answers are usually not the ones that rank highest in organic searches.
SGE, which appears for approximately 87% of keywords, typically shows around 10 links per answer, but only about four of these are unique. Interestingly, these links often come from just four different websites, indicating a concentration of sources.
This finding is significant for ecommerce businesses as SGE could reduce organic traffic to websites for many keywords. Users are likely to get their answers directly from SGE without visiting the actual websites. However, there's a positive aspect: websites that don't rank in the top 10 of Google's organic results might still appear in SGE links, offering them a new avenue for visibility for underdogs.
What does this mean for ecommerce sellers?
Basically the rule of the game seemed to have changed drastically. Whatever SEO optimization has been working till now, probably has to be rethought in light with what’s happening with SGE and how Google is re-shuffling it’s algo. AI will probably make a mess out of a lot of well established processes and SEO is just the start.
