Your Googling Experience Is About To Change Completely

We’ve definitely been expecting this as we’ve written in previous issues, and these new updates require a good think for all ecommerce sellers and marketers.


Google's Search Generative Engine (SGE), currently in beta, is poised to significantly alter the landscape of online search. With billions of search data points collected since its May launch, SGE's current form closely mirrors what will eventually be released to all users.

This major update, likely to go live in early 2024, will fundamentally change how search queries, particularly in reviews/affiliate, medical, and how-to content areas, are answered. SGE's advanced capabilities can potentially bypass the need for users to visit traditional content sites, directing them instead to e-commerce or specific service providers.

Google's monetization strategy for SGE remains a key factor in its launch timeline. Despite initial plans for a summer or Q3 release, delays have pushed the launch to next year. OpenAI's advancements add pressure on Google, as any delay risks market share loss.

Moreover, Google's Helpful Content Update, aimed at promoting genuinely useful content, has already impacted some sites negatively. With SGE's launch, content that fails to add unique value may become even less relevant.

What does this mean for ecommerce sellers?

E-commerce and content-driven websites must urgently rethink their strategies to stay relevant. Merely aggregating or using generative AI for content creation won't suffice. You need to cough up value otherwise SGE won’t be lovin’ you long time…
