The narrative of AI search engines threatening Google's dominance in the search market has gained momentum, with tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini enhancing their capabilities. The emergence of platforms like Perplexity and You.com, along with AI integrations in Google and Bing, suggests a shift away from traditional search methods towards direct, AI-powered answers to our queries. However, the essence of a search engine's functionality extends beyond mere information retrieval. Google's vast daily queries range from scientific research to basic navigational tasks, illustrating the diverse utility that Google provides.
Upon testing AI tools against Google using popular queries, it became apparent that while AI can sometimes offer more helpful information, it struggles with the efficiency and accuracy that Google consistently delivers. Navigation, information retrieval, and even real-time updates like sports scores reveal the challenges AI search engines face in matching Google's performance. Having to fact check the answers defeats the point and in some cases AI contradicts itself as well. Below you can see an example that is completely wrong.
Additionally, for more complex or explorational queries, AI's synthesized answers and source citations offer an intriguing alternative, but still, they lack the immediacy and reliability of Google's results.
The conclusion for you? Using AI for regular queries in gathering data (especially more recent information) for decision making purposes may have to wait a while. The search landscape for AI-powered search engines still needs to be optimised. Google still remains a critical channel for driving traffic and sales, however with the improvement and integration of AI sellers should consider how their products and content are presented and discovered through these new platforms.
