This new TikTok trend is capturing both fascination and unease, as users experiment with an AI-driven zoom-out feature. It has amassed over 3.5 billion views, and involves using a CapCut template to artificially expand the background of an image, like a selfie, creating a full scene based on the AI's predictions.

Users upload a photo, and the AI zooms out, adding an artificial backdrop that resonates with the image's context. This process repeats until a video with up to 12 slots is complete. The resulting videos, often eerie due to the AI's accuracy and ominous sound effects, have sparked a mix of reactions. TikTok creator Fleur Jansen's post using this trend reached over 30 million views, with comments ranging from fascination to unease.

What does this mean for ecommerce sellers?

I think the combo between real and AI-generated content will keep merging and blurring more and more and that could be an interesting opportunity for brands from a creative POV. That said, notice that consumers are still not completely comfortable with AI and the level of realism it can achieve. There are still a lot of “Black Mirror” connotations most consumers get from interacting with AI and it will take a while until it becomes the new normal.
