TikTok Influencers Replaced By AI?

TikTok is developing a feature that allows brands to use virtual influencers for selling products through videos and live streams on the platform. This tool, mirroring capabilities already popular in TikTok's Chinese counterpart, Douyin, generates video ad scripts from advertiser prompts and creates AI-generated influencers to execute these promotions.

The concept has gained traction in China where virtual influencers can operate around the clock, boosting sales significantly. Western adoption and its success remain to be seen, given cultural and market differences in consumer engagement with digital personas.

This development represents a significant push by TikTok to amplify its e-commerce initiatives, leveraging the model that has seen substantial revenue generation through Douyin. Despite the enthusiasm for in-app spending, TikTok has noted that most current expenditures are directed towards creator donations rather than product purchases, a trend they hope to shift with this new technology.

What does this mean for e-commerce sellers?

For e-commerce sellers using TikTok, this tech could boost sales through increased engagement and interactivity. However, it's still new, so carefully test AI influencers with your audience. As we’ve written before, consumers are not always ready or so very keen on AI-generated marketing and content. Influencers won’t be an exception.
