TikTok and Meta's AI Competition For Ad Dollars

In the ever-evolving landscape of social media advertising, TikTok and Meta are intensifying their efforts to capture advertisers' budgets through advanced AI-powered tools. These developments signal a shift towards more automated, efficient, and potentially more effective ad creation and management processes.

TikTok's Smart+: Automating Ad Campaigns

TikTok has officially launched Smart+, its answer to Google's Performance Max and Meta's Advantage+. This AI-powered ad-buying tool aims to streamline the entire advertising process on the platform, from creative development to targeting and optimization.

Smart+ offers a modular approach, allowing marketers to use its features selectively. This flexibility distinguishes it from competing solutions that often require full commitment to the entire suite. Advertisers can choose to let TikTok's AI handle the entire process or maintain control over specific aspects of their campaigns.

Early results seem promising. TikTok reports that advertisers optimizing for value with Smart+ web campaigns achieve a 53% improvement in return on ad spend on average. Ray-Ban, for instance, reported a 50% reduction in cost per acquisition and a 47% increase in conversion rates during a beta Smart+ campaign.

Not to be outdone, Meta is testing new AI video editing capabilities for advertisers on Facebook and Instagram. These tools allow for the animation of still images and the expansion of video backgrounds, potentially increasing the visual appeal and effectiveness of ads.

The AI animation tool can transform static images into videos, adding motion to elements within the frame. Additionally, Meta's AI can expand existing videos by generating "unseen pixels in each video frame," effectively increasing the size and scope of the original content.

These features build upon Meta's existing AI offerings for advertisers, which already include text and image generation capabilities. The company plans to roll out these new tools more widely in early 2025.

The Broader Implications

The introduction of these AI-powered advertising tools by both TikTok and Meta reflects a broader trend in the industry. TikTok executives believe that with the advent of Smart+, the gap between their platform and Meta's advertising capabilities will close significantly.

However, TikTok still has ground to cover. eMarketer forecasts that TikTok's worldwide ad revenue will reach $22.32 billion by the end of 2024, while Meta's is expected to total $154.16 billion.

Both platforms are not just focusing on immediate sales but are emphasizing broader business outcomes and long-term growth. TikTok, for instance, has introduced GMV (Gross Merchandise Value) Max, an AI tool designed to boost merchant sales across its entire shoppable ecosystem.

Measurement and Attribution Challenges

As these AI tools proliferate, questions of measurement and attribution become increasingly important. TikTok claims that traditional measurement tools may not fully capture the platform's impact on purchases. The company's research suggests that 79% of purchases driven by TikTok aren't attributed to the platform, and conversions are undervalued by 73%.

To address this, TikTok has developed its own measurement tools, including conversion lift studies. These studies aim to demonstrate the platform's incremental value, with advertisers reportedly seeing an average conversion lift of at least 25%.

Looking Ahead

As AI continues to reshape the advertising landscape, both TikTok and Meta are positioning themselves as serious contenders for ad dollars. The competition between these platforms is likely to drive further innovation in AI-powered advertising tools, potentially offering marketers more efficient and effective ways to reach their audiences.
