Hey there!

Another week of AI and ecommerce is here. Although we were waiting on OpenAI to announce their Search product to the world yesterday, that didn’t materialize. That said, they didn’t miss to create an uproar with their newest GPT4o model, which is getting us very excited. Today we are also covering the launch of Upend, another AI Search competitor who might have an interesting edge over our favourite, Perplexity.

A Search Engine Powered by 100 LLMs

Upend, a Canadian startup, has recently emerged from stealth to provide professionals with generative AI search powered by some of the most advanced large language models (LLMs) available. The platform, which started as a summer project by Jeevan Arora from the University of Toronto School, has evolved into a full-fledged offering that enterprise teams can sign up for.

The platform offers a generative AI search bar where users can select from a wide range of LLMs and ask questions about work or everyday life. The chosen model combines the query with web search or a select source to provide grounded answers, complete with citations for users to refer back to the source.

One of the key differentiators of Upend is its extensive library of LLMs, which includes 100 models, both closed and open, general-purpose and task-specific. This is in contrast to competitors like Perplexity, which offers around five mainstream LLMs. Upend also provides an option to base answers on Wikipedia, which is not available with Perplexity.

Pricing is another area where Upend aims to stand out, with plans to charge based on total team usage rather than the number of users on a team. The team plan is currently priced at $20/month, giving access to all models in the library up to a certain token threshold, with additional usage charged based on consumption.

As the use of generative AI models in search continues to grow, platforms like Upend are poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of the industry. AI-driven solutions can help users access more accurate and relevant information, while also making advanced LLMs more affordable and accessible to a broader audience.

In the future, Upend's CEO envisions the platform becoming a full-fledged task engine that not only provides answers but also executes tasks for users. For example, if a user searches for "How to convert my PNG image to JPG," Upend could provide an answer and also offer to complete the task on the user's behalf.

As AI chatbots and virtual agents become more prevalent, traditional search engines are expected to see a decline in usage. According to Gartner, traditional search engine volume will drop 25% by 2026, with search marketing losing market share to AI-powered solutions. This shift will require companies to rethink their marketing channels strategy as generative AI becomes more embedded across all aspects of the enterprise.

The rise of platforms like Upend and Perplexity highlights the growing importance of AI in the search industry. As these technologies continue to evolve and mature, they have the potential to revolutionize the way users access and interact with information, making it more accessible, affordable, and relevant to their needs.
