The New Search Engine That Might Dethrone Google

In the digital era, Google has been the go-to search engine for anyone needing information. However, the emergence of Perplexity, a new AI-powered search engine, has started to challenge this norm. Founded by ex-OpenAI and Meta AI researchers, and recently fueled by a significant $74 million funding round, Perplexity has quickly garnered attention from tech enthusiasts and investors alike, including Jeff Bezos.

Unlike Google, Perplexity doesn't return a list of links in response to queries. It leverages AI to scour the web and generate summaries with citations, offering a more direct answer to users' questions. Its standout feature, "Copilot," guides users in refining their queries through interactive questions, enhancing the search experience. Additionally, Perplexity offers the capability to focus searches within specific sources, like academic papers or YouTube videos, providing more tailored results.

Despite its innovative approach, Perplexity is not without challenges. It currently lacks the extensive ecosystem of services that Google offers, such as Gmail and Google Docs, and it operates on a much smaller scale with 10 million monthly active users. Moreover, Perplexity's business model is still evolving, relying on a mix of free and premium services without the integration of ads.

For ecommerce sellers, the rise of AI-powered search engines like Perplexity signals a shift in how consumers find products and information online. The precision and efficiency of AI-driven summaries could lead to changes in SEO strategies, as the focus may shift from optimizing for link-based search results to ensuring visibility within AI-generated content. The other big question mark is around what is the future of PPC? Where would ads live in a world where AI removes the need to browse and multi-search?
