Guide: Creating UGC-Style Images With AI

My experience using AI for UGC-style imagery

Professional-looking user-generated content (UGC) images can significantly boost product engagement. Studies show that authentic-looking product photos often perform better than polished studio shots. However, creating convincing UGC-style imagery typically requires working with multiple content creators or investing in specialized photography.

While many marketers know AI could help create UGC-style images, they often don't know how to implement it effectively. ChatGPT with GPT-4o provides a practical solution that requires minimal technical knowledge while producing authentic-looking UGC product photos.

The AI approach simplifies this by requiring just one quality product image and clear style parameters. This makes UGC-style imagery accessible to everyone, not just brands with large influencer budgets or creative teams.

This streamlined process lets you focus on creative direction instead of creator management and production logistics.

What You'll Need

  • ChatGPT Access:

    • GPT-4o for image generation

    • (Optional) Another AI model for brainstorming creative ideas

  • Materials:

    • A high-quality product image with a neutral background

    • (Optional) Your brand guidelines

  • Reference Material:

    • Examples of UGC content you like (Instagram stories, TikTok posts, etc.)

How to Create UGC-Style Images with AI

Step 1: Define Your UGC Style Elements

Decide which features will make your image look authentic. Common elements include:

  • Camera Characteristics:

    • "Shot on iPhone"

    • "Smartphone camera quality"

    • "Front-facing camera look"

  • Composition:

    • "Off-center framing"

    • "Selfie angle"

    • "Looking up at subject"

  • Lighting:

    • "Natural indoor lighting"

    • "Golden hour sunlight"

    • "Slight phone flash"

  • Authentic Details:

    • "Thumb visible in frame"

    • "Slight motion blur"

    • "Everyday background"

  • Natural Imperfections:

    • "Slightly grainy quality"

    • "Normal shadows"

    • "Not professionally edited"

Choose 3-5 elements that match your brand's style.

Step 2: Develop Your UGC Concepts

Use ChatGPT to combine your chosen elements into complete concepts.

Example Prompt:

You are a creative photographer who specializes in UGC product imagery. We want to create 3 different UGC-style concepts for our product (a [Product Name]). Use these style elements:
- Camera: iPhone 13
- Composition: Off-center with selfie angle
- Lighting: Golden hour through window
- Authentic Detail: Thumb in corner
- Imperfection: Slightly grainy

For each concept, describe:
1. The camera angle and framing
2. The lighting and background
3. Which authentic detail to include
4. How the product is displayed

Provide a brief description (2-3 sentences) for each concept.

Review the ideas and select the one that best fits your brand and goals.

Step 3: Generate Your UGC Images

  1. Start with GPT-4o

    • Upload your product image to the chat

  2. Write a Detailed Prompt Example:

Using the attached product image, create an authentic-looking UGC photo with these characteristics:

    • Camera: iPhone 13 quality (slight lens distortion)
    • Composition: Off-center; showing someone's arm extended holding the product
    • Lighting: Warm golden hour light through a window, with soft shadows
    • Authentic Detail: Thumb partially visible in the corner
    • Imperfections: Slight grain and natural highlights like a phone photo

Place the product in the foreground with a casual background (like a bedroom shelf with books and plants). Generate a 1200×1200 image.
  3. Review and Refine

    • Check if the image looks authentic

    • If needed, ask for specific adjustments:

      • "Make it slightly grainier"

      • "Add more background items"

      • "Adjust the angle to show the product better"

  4. Save Your Image

    • Download and save it with a descriptive filename

Step 4: Create a Series (Optional)

For multiple images showing a sequence (like using a product), repeat Step 3 with slight variations while keeping the setting consistent:

  • Image 1: "Holding the product"

  • Image 2: "Using the product"

  • Image 3: "Reacting to the product"

Understanding the Limitations

While AI is helpful, you should still review each image carefully. Some platforms require disclosure when using AI-generated imagery, so check the latest guidelines before posting. The technology works best with physical products and may struggle with certain services or abstract concepts.

For marketers looking for practical advantages, this technology helps create authentic-looking content without managing multiple creators.
