Analysis: The Battle of the AI Assistants
And so, you’ve been looking at Copilot or Duet and you’re wondering if it’s worth pocketing out of $30+ per month to get on that AI bandwagon. Below is a neat little summary of what to expect + some additional commentary on the effectiveness of it.
The Summary: What are they?
Google Duet AI and Microsoft Copilot are AI assistants based on generative AI and large language models. Google Duet AI integrates with Google Workspace apps like Sheets, Docs, Slides, Gmail, and Meet, assisting in document creation, email drafting, and more. Microsoft Copilot is embedded in Windows 11 and Microsoft 365 apps including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams, aiding in system settings management and document generation.
Pros for Each
Google Duet AI:
Multi-language support
Ability to adjust writing tone and style
Integrated across various Google Workspace applications
Mobile device compatibility
Microsoft Copilot:
Document generation based on existing content and format
Assistance with Windows 11 operation and customization
Integration with Microsoft 365 applications
Cons for Each
Google Duet AI:
Limited to Google ecosystem; not compatible with other platforms like Chrome OS or Linux
Dependency on Google Cloud account
Microsoft Copilot:
Requires additional Microsoft 365 subscription
Limited to Microsoft ecosystem; lacks broader application compatibility
Pricing Comparison
Both Google Duet AI and Microsoft Copilot are priced at $30 per user per month. However, Microsoft Copilot requires an additional Microsoft 365 subscription, which can add to the overall cost. Google Duet AI necessitates a Google Cloud account but offers $300 in free credits, with unclear longevity or consumption rates.
The Verdict
The choice depends largely on user preference and existing ecosystem usage. BUT having read plenty about the quality of output of both, I would say Copilot is a much better bet. Duet seems to be having a lot of problems with inaccurate summaries, hallucinations, glitches and inconsistency in performance.
Probably the main problem underpinning all this is really the underlying AI. Copilot is very much powered by OpenAI Codex while Duet is still hunkering away with Bard and the reality is that Gemini or no Gemini, Bard is not yet a match for OpenAI.
