Amazon’s AI-generated Reviews Fail
We were pretty excited about this in August when it came out. We thought, hey…AI-generated review summaries? This might be a gooden for both sellers and buyers alike. Well, we might have gotten excited a lil’ too fast.
Let’s roll the film back in:
First, Amazon implements AI to transform its voluminous customer reviews into concise summaries. The goal was to streamline the shopping experience by distilling billions of reviews into a few sentences each. However, now it seems that this is becoming a bit of a flop. In some cases, the summaries inaccurately describe products or amplify negative feedback, causing concern for customers and Amazon merchants alike. Of course, sellers, particularly affected during the holiday shopping season, fear these summaries could unjustly highlight minor negative aspects, impacting sales.
For instance, a summary for a home fitness inversion table mistakenly categorized it as a desk, emphasizing its sturdiness and pain relief. Another instance saw the $70 Brass Birmingham board game's summary disproportionately highlight ease of use issues, which were mentioned in less than 1% of its reviews. Similar inaccuracies were found in summaries of other products like Penn tennis balls and mason jars, where minimal negative feedback was overrepresented.
Amazon is sticking to its guns and saying all is good, but there’s a complete lack of transparency and guidance about its AI algorithms and sellers are unhappy. (Surprise, surprise).
What does this mean for ecommerce sellers?
Knowing Amazon, this issue will only get resolved if one of the following things happen:
Customers get seriously disgruntled
Sales start dipping
All of the above
Unfortunately, justice for sellers is not on Amazon’s high priority list so, dear Amazon sellers, let’s just hope the AI gets smarter over time or customers complain.
