Amazon (Finally) Out With An AI Copywriting Tool For Sellers
Well, no surprises here, really…Amazon is testing a new AI tool that automatically generates product listing titles, descriptions and bullet points for sellers. The goal is to minimize manual effort in crafting compelling copy. However, human oversight is still required to review compliance with Amazon's strict content policies.
Other ecommerce platforms like BigCommerce, Shopify and Wix already offer AI features to assist with product descriptions and other copy. But Amazon's vast data on user behavior equips it to potentially develop highly optimized AI-generated listings.
While promising for sellers, risks remain around inaccuracies. Amazon emphasizes sellers must still edit AI content for policy adherence.
What does this mean for ecommerce sellers?
On the surface, it means faster, easier product listing creation and optimization. That said, sellers should really figure out how to strike the balance and not turn their listings into crappy AI-generated output without any brand identity or keyword optimizations. I predict in the short term, Amazon will be flooded with sub-par generic-sounding product listings. So how would you take advantage of that? :)
TikTok Follows Insta In AI Content Labeling
In last week’s newsletter, we talked about the rise of AI influencers. So it’s not surprising that TikTok has implemented a new feature allowing creators to label AI-generated content on the platform. A toggle for disclosing the use of AI is now available when uploading videos. TikTok indicates labeling is important to prevent content removal, suggesting it may take down unlabeled AI content.
The company previously banned deepfakes in 2020 under its guidelines prohibiting distorted media. A viral deepfake video was removed in February 2023.
The labeling feature follows similar moves by platforms like Instagram, which is reportedly developing AI content labels to increase transparency.
Providers argue labels help users understand what is real versus artificial as generative AI proliferates. However, critics contend identification remains challenging as the technology rapidly advances.
What does this mean for ecommerce sellers?
With an overwhelming boom of AI-generated everything, users will soon start catching on and questioning the authenticity of a lot of influencer and brand-generated content. Transparency will become ever more valued by consumers. Brands should do well to ensure they use AI to its fullest but also remain fully transparent with their customers regardless of the platform.
Analysis: Can Search Engines Detect AI Content?
The explosion in AI content tools has led to questions about whether search engines can detect machine-generated content. But this may be the wrong question after all….
Google has long dealt with low-quality autogenerated pages aimed at manipulation. Machine-generated content isn't entirely new, but inconsistent quality from large language models raises doubts about consistently adding value.
Google remains vague on AI content enforcement specifics but focuses on quality over production methods. There have been a few experiments with people launching fully AI-generated content websites and Google suppressing these. So the core question isn't necessarily detectability but quality as judged by search engines. For now, LLMs still struggle with accuracy and meeting E-E-A-T criteria without human oversight.
What’s important to bear in mind is that Google is also experimenting with keeping users within search results rather than sending them to other sites. Check out last week’s edition to read more on that..
What this means is that it could diminish the value of long-tail, zero-volume keywords if Google can generate its own answers. There are financial incentives for Google to retain users versus sending them to existing pages it knows about and so there might be some interesting and tough times coming for the SEO community.
What does this mean for ecommerce sellers?
Yes, you can use your favorite GPT-4 to bash out some pages. No, you can’t just copy-paste it. Quality over quantity and Google will be happy. Also, watch this space for what Google does to its search results page and how it might change SEO optimization strategies.
